about us

The Redemptorist congregation is a Catholic religious order of brothers and priests.  Their total number today is 5,197 (as of December 31, 2011)   and they are at present working in 77 countries all over the world.  Redemptorists are itinerant preachers by charism.    The congregation was founded on November 9, 1732 at Scala, Italy by St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori.

As Redemptorist Missionaries, we continue the charism of Alphonsus in the Church and in society.

"Strong in faith, rejoicing in hope, burning with charity, on fire with zeal, in humility of heart and persevering in prayer, Redemptorists as apostolic men and genuine disciples of Saint Alphonsus follow Christ the Redeemer with Hearts full of joy; denying themselves and always ready to undertake what is demanding and challenging, they share in the mystery of Christ and proclaim it in Gospel simplicity of life and language, that they may bring to people Plentiful Redemption" (Redemptorist Constitutions, No. 20).

Redemptorists live in missionary communities, always welcoming and prayerful, like Mary of Nazareth. By means of missions, retreats, parish ministry, ecumenical apostolates, the ministry of reconciliation and the teaching of Moral Theology, they proclaim the love of God our Father which in Jesus "dwelt amongst us" so as to become profound mercy and The Word of Life which nourishes the human heart and gives life meaning so as to live it to the fullest in freedom and solidarity with others. And, like Alphonsus, Redemptorists make a very clear option for the poor affirming their dignity and greatness before God and believing that the Good News of Our Lord is meant in a special way for them.

"To fulfil their mission in the Church, Redemptorists perform their missionary work as a community.  For apostolic life in common paves the way most effectively for the life of pastoral charity.

Therefore, an essential law of life for the members is this:  that they live in community and carry out their apostolic work through community.  For this reason the community aspect must always be kept in mind when any missionary work is being accepted."(Const. 21)

We are missionaries and essentially proclaimers of the Gospel, the heart of which is mercy.  Thus the motto of our congregation is "Copiosa apud eum redemptio" (In Jesus our Lord, there is plentiful of redemption). Redemptorists are known for their simple and down-to-earth preaching particularly by people living in the rural and countryside The Redemptorist is "popular" in that he has an easy way with people and uses simple language.

The total number of members in the Vice-Province is thirty-three, of which three are brothers, seven are temporarily professed and twenty three priests.  We have five Australian missionaries, most of whom have been in the country for the past 50 years.  We are a mixture of young and old coming from different region and cultures of the country.
